Cultivating Good Business Communication is Critical

Cultivating Good Business Communication is Critical

Communication is key to any good relationship, and this is even more true when that relationship is based in a business setting. This is the case whether you’re referring to the correspondence between an organization and its clientele, or the collaboration between employees as they complete their tasks. Let’s consider four things small businesses can and should do to create a communications strategy that encourages their success.

Why Good Communication is so Crucial

For a business, many of its problems can be resolved via proper communications. Whether it’s confusion regarding the strategy that the business plans to follow and customer needs, or internal conflicts amongst departments and individual employees, multiple factors can upset the flow of the workplace and negatively impact both its productivity and culture.

Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to help absolve (or at the very least minimize) these factors:

Cut Back on Distractions

One of the biggest obstacles to effective communications is, perhaps predictably, inconsistent listening habits in the face of so many other things calling for attention. How often have you tried to speak to someone about something important, only to have their focus remain on the screen in front of them? How often have you found yourself doing the same?

You should always put forth an effort to devote your full attention to the person trying to communicate with you whenever possible. This will help you to accomplish the tasks that would otherwise provide these distractions more effectively while building habits that suit a collaborative environment.

Don’t Rely on Official Meetings

Meetings are often considered the de facto place to confer with your team members but relying on them exclusively is a great way to hold your business back. Not only should most meetings be structured and committed to set topics, but some people also may not feel fully comfortable talking in front of a group, regardless of who is present. More importantly, a meeting isn’t when the work happens, so those invested in the project are typically not in the thick of things during the meeting. More questions or comments will likely come up outside of the official meetings. Communicating independently and privately will likely get you the information you need, when you actively need it.

Ask Questions

While confidence in the workplace is an attractive trait, being fully informed should arguably be prioritized above it somewhat. Don’t hesitate to proactively ask for more information if more would help you to fulfill a task or responsibility. Otherwise, many questions—or the answers to those that were never asked—may only come up after it is too late.

Put Your Tools to Good Use

With so many means of communication available today for users to put to use, it can be only too easy for communications to become fragmented and scattered across different platforms. To help avoid this outcome, it helps to select a single platform for the organization to utilize… and with so many collaborative platforms out there offering comprehensive integrations with your other business tools, it can be as simple as picking the right one for you.
